Jewellery retail, explained.

A plain-English glossary of the gold, jewellery and retail terms you’ll meet across KaratDoods.

Karat (K)
A measure of gold purity out of 24. 22K (916) and 18K (750) are the most common for jewellery.
916 / Purity
The fineness of gold — 916 means 91.6% pure gold, i.e. 22 karat.
Hallmark
An official mark certifying the purity of a gold or silver article, issued under BIS in India.
HUID
Hallmark Unique Identification — a six-digit alphanumeric code assigned to each hallmarked item.
Making Charges
The labour/manufacturing cost added to the metal value of a piece, charged per gram or as a flat fee.
Wastage / Tunch
The allowance for metal lost during manufacturing, reflected in the final price.
Karigar
The craftsman or artisan who makes jewellery, often on a job-work basis against issued metal.
Job Work
Outsourced manufacturing where metal is issued to a karigar and finished pieces are received back.
Girvi / Gold Loan
Lending money against pledged gold, tracking principal, interest, renewals and release.
Gross Weight
The total weight of a piece including stones and other embellishments.
Net Weight
The weight of the precious metal only, after deducting stones and findings.
Buyback
Repurchasing previously sold jewellery from a customer, usually at prevailing metal rates.
Old Gold Exchange
Taking in old gold against a new purchase, valued by weight and purity.
Gold Savings Scheme
A plan where customers pay regular instalments and redeem the accumulated value against jewellery.
Loyalty Points
Reward value earned on purchases that customers can redeem later (Kanz points in KaratDoods).
Day Close
End-of-day reconciliation of cash, cards and counters against the system.
SKU / Tag
A unique code (often a printed barcode or RFID tag) identifying each distinct product.
Inventory Valuation
The current worth of stock on hand, valued against live metal rates.
GST / HSN
Goods and Services Tax and its Harmonised System of Nomenclature codes used on invoices.
Ledger
The core accounting record where all financial transactions are posted in double entry.
